Don Sweeney, GM of the Boston Bruins, is fresh off of firing head coach Jim Montgomery, and he has not put all staff and players on notice. Less than 24 hours after firing head coach Jim Montgomery, Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney sent a straight message to his players and staff: shape up, or more changes are on the horizon. Addressing the media, Sweeney spared no blows in relation to the recent performances of his team, making clear that subpar outings will not be tolerated. Although he did admit that letting Montgomery go was an unfair thing to have to do, he revealed a surprise, for most, today: contract extension talks with him had been ongoing but didn't quite get over the line. When combined with the results the team was gathering, this sealed Montgomery's fate.

Despite his decisive action, Sweeney himself is not free from criticism from the fans, who feel accountability needs to start from the top.

Since taking over as GM in 2015, Sweeney has overseen one Stanley Cup Final appearance but struggled with consistency enough to raise questions for some about whether he's truly fit for the job. Sweeney emphatically denied the rumors that Montgomery had lost the room, putting it succinctly as being a player issue. No. You can't say that Monty came in and made a positive influence and connection with players for two-plus seasons and then turn around and say they just tuned him out. They haven't performed at the level they need to. That's as simplistic as I say. Monty's a great coach. - Don Sweeney Now, with Joe Sacco taking the reins as interim head coach, it's all about results from the roster. The greater question, though, is how much more patience the organization will have, and what other tricks Sweeney might have up his sleeve if things don't get better soon.
