Former draft pick of the Edmonton Oilers, Patrick Dovigi, has just blown an insane amount of money on a superyacht and faces backlash for this reckless spending. Patrick Dovigi first began his hockey career during the 1990s, playing as a goaltender in youth leagues, until he went to the Erie Otters of the OHL during the 1996-1997 season. During the 1997 NHL Draft, he was drafted in the second round, 41st overall, by the Edmonton Oilers. From such a brilliant start to his hockey career, Dovigi never made it to the NHL and, therefore, did something else entirely. The ever-rising threat of a warming climate saw him found Green For Life Environmental, today better known as GFL, an environmentally friendly waste management firm. Led by Dovigi, GFL is today North America's fourth-largest environmental services provider, valued at billions.

And yet, with the considerable expansion of his green empire, Dovigi has attracted criticism for his exact opposite lifestyle choices, notably a penchant for multi-million-dollar property purchases. That includes $120 million worth of homes in Aspen, Colorado, not to mention his latest attention-grabbing buy: a $362-million purchase in May 2023 of the 378-foot luxury yacht 'Lady Jogia' from billionaire Michael Lee-Chin.

The purchase, one of the largest yacht deals ever, drew backlash. Critics pointed out the environmental hypocrisy of an eco-advocate owning a superyacht, notorious for its massive carbon footprint.

Social media erupted with accusations of greed overshadowing Dovigi's environmental commitments, questioning whether his «green» mission is truly about sustainability or wealth. Until intentions are clear, the actions of Dovigi send a mixed signal. As climate concerns mount, many are hoping the billionaire will right the ship back toward his initial mission before it's too late.
