Esa Tikkanen was a legend in the NHL, as he made up part of the Edmonton Oilers dynasty teams and also won a Cup with the New York Rangers as well.

Five-time Stanley Cup champion Esa Tikkanen has officially settled his unpaid international tax case after reaching a resolution over income declared between 2015 and 2019.

The Finnish forward, whose case started unfolding over the course of the last few months, was accused of not paying more than 165,000 Euros in back taxes.

As part of the resolution, 59-year-old Esa Tikkanen was given a one-year sentence, suspended. That means jail time will not need to be served as long as he adheres to court-ordered conditions, but should he fail, he will receive one year behind bars.

Conditions generally include adherence to monetary obligations and avoiding further offenses while on probation.

At first, Tikkanen denied any wrongdoing, claiming that he never consciously withheld tax payments. He subsequently admitted that the underpayment happened because he was ignorant about how those incomes should be taxed.

"Tikkanen's conduct has covered a total of five tax years, the crime has also lasted a long time and therefore the tax fraud is also gross when assessed as a whole, the Western Uusimaa District Court wrote."

Throughout the investigation, Tikkanen says he has paid all his back taxes, ending up with no debt.

Tikkanen played an NHL career spanning over 800 regular-season games and another 186 playoff contests. Four of his five Stanley Cup wins came playing for the Edmonton Oilers during the dynastic years of 1985 to 1990.

In 1994, his fifth would be part of the New York Rangers' magical year. Beyond those teams, Tikkanen also laced up for the St. Louis Blues, New Jersey Devils, Florida Panthers, and Washington Capitals during his time in the league.

Court documents stated the unpaid taxes were connected with income Tikkanen had received while working as a hockey expert and appearing in advertisements for the gaming company Unibet.

The case is now closed, with Tikkanen not facing any further punishment as long as he fulfills the court's wishes from here on out.
