Fans of the Edmonton Oilers have something new to be excited about, as the club has announced the unveiling of two brand-new logos for the team. The Edmonton Oilers have taken and won over fans with their creativity in producing theme-game logo designs for games during the current season.
The two new logos will debut Thursday against the Red Wings

The success of its Day of the Dead logo earned widespread praise, and for Thursday's game against the Detroit Red Wings comes two simply lovely new logo designs for its Lunar New Year theme.

The work for both new logo designs is courtesy of Emily Chu, a local artist and founder of Together Chinatown Arts Festival, and co-organizer of Chinatown Greetings. «As someone born in the Year of the Snake, I am thrilled to create this Lunar New Year logo for the Oilers,» Chu said in a release.

The base mark is a re-designed, reworked version of its traditional mark, taken in a direction sensitive to the Year of the Snake. In both, a twisting snake runs through the mark, taking over for the top part of the oil drop and curving its path through and over Oilers script in bold, strong form. The secondary mark, a shoulder patch-designed mark, takes its cues in mahjong tile form and a curving path through a snake. «The Snake is wise, intuitive and thoughtful, so I wanted to create something beautiful and elegant. The snake's shape is inspired by Chinese knots or loops, which are often found on traditional clothing and wall hangings. These knots represent good luck and protection,» Chu described. «The overall logo design also incorporates elements, symbols, and patterns using symmetry and balance. The pattern in the outer circle is inspired by designs found on mahjong tiles, adding an extra element of playfulness and mystery to the snake's character.»

Fans can already buy merchandise featuring both new logos at the Ice District Authentics shop as of now, and at the game itself on Thursday. The Oilers have said that a specialty jersey with the designs will also be available, but so far, they have not revealed what that will look like, and there is no official date that it will drop yet either. All profits made from the merchandise will be donated to Re:Vita, an organization that is located in Edmonton's Chinatown.
