It is no longer a secret to fans that the Habs are in dire need of adding at least one promising goaltender to their organization.

There is potentially just one who has become a free agent, as his NCAA career is now over.

Michigan Tech goalie Blake Pietila is now free to sign wherever he wants, as he is not currently linked to any NHL team.

Pietila has dominated the American college system this season, as he was named CCHA Player of the Year on Thursday. Pietila was unanimously selected by the CCHA coaches as a first team All-CCHA pick, and was also honored as the league's Goaltender of the Year.

The 23-year-old netminder broke Michigan Tech's single-season (10) and career (20) shutout records, while becoming the all-time leader in wins with 58.

He leads the nation in shutouts, while ranking second with 23 wins. He concluded the season with a .929 save percentage and a 1.99 goals-against average.

The Howell, Michigan native played 36 games for the Huskies, compiling a 23-10-3 record.

He is also one of three finalists for the Mike Richter Award and is one of ten finalists for the prestigious Hobey-Baker Trophy, where he is competing against two CH prospects, Lane Hutson and Sean Farrell.

As we said, since he is not affiliated with any NHL team, he is free to sign anywhere.

He could be a great pickup for Kent Hughes, especially since the organization has absolutely nothing to lose by giving him a chance to make his mark in the AHL, or even in the ECHL, with the Trois-Rivières Lions.
