Jacob Trouba as well as many players around the league are upset by how the whole trade situation was handled, and now the league could change some rules. The recent Jacob Trouba trade has unquestionably been the hottest of hot topics in hockey circles and on social media.

Regardless of whether one sits on the belief this was warranted or not, it would now appear the fall-out from this chaotic situation may indeed force some change. There are reports NHL players are less than pleased about the manner in which the New York Rangers skirted a no-trade clause belonging to Jacob Trouba after threatening to place him on waivers. What bothered the players to a large degree was if you can't be traded to certain teams, why should you be allowed to go to those teams on waivers? said Friedman on Hockey Night in Canada.

The move reportedly sparked discussion about changing contract protections when it comes to the next CBA. Insiders say players may seek to eliminate limited no-trade clauses and replace them with another version of partial no-movement clauses. The current no-movement clause shields players from trades and waivers. But Friedman suggested players might be able to live with a system in which they can't be claimed by X number of teams after being placed on waivers. How that would wash out in the CBA is anybody's guess. I think what they are gonna ask the players association to do is have a conversation in the upcoming CBA negotiations where maybe there should just be one form of protection, revealed Friedman. If you want to give me partial protection then I can't go to this team at all, it shouldn't be a trade or it shouldn't be waivers. A case against Trouba would apparently state a player's stance on such issues in concrete, and might well create an ugly CBA negotiation issue. How it all plays out remains to be seen as the sides prepare for eventual negotiations.
