Last night the Toronto Maple Leafs lost to the Washington Capitals and after the game head coach Craig Berube did not hide his frustration and disappointment.

After finally getting Auston Matthews back late last month everyone expected the Toronto Maple Leafs to take a step forward back towards the elite team they are known to be.

Instead, the Maple Leafs have struggled to find success with Auston Matthews back and dropped yet another game this time to the Washington Capitals.

Despite having a long impressive winning streak against the Capitals over the last 5 seasons the Toronto Maple Leafs could not find a way to win with Craig Berube at the helm.

After the game, Berube spoke to the media and laid into his team about their effort and lack of ability to stick to the game plan and style of play he is trying to institute.

Craig Berube goes off on his team after a poor effort in the loss to the Capitals

During his post-game press conference, Craig Berube was asked about what led his team to lose to the Washington Capitals.

According to his interpretation of the game, the Maple Leafs were just outworked in every aspect of the game.

I thought they were just more competitive than us. They played a harder game than us. They won more puck battles than us. They skated better than us. They were just better.

He continued and then placed some of the blame on former Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe who had instilled in players to play an East and West style game instead of a more direct style.

You are opening up a big can of worms there with [the controversial goal]. On that play, the bottom line is that instead of just going the other way with the puck, we brought it back. We did that too much tonight, from the first period on. It was the whole game. It eventually bit us and cost us. We didn't play a north game. We didn't play fast. They were the better team. They deserved to win.

With this comment, it seems like Craig Berube is still placing blame on outside factors instead of properly taking responsibility for his inability to implement his style with the core group.

The Maple Leafs will now look to get back on track against the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday.
