In the past two years, Brett Sutter has served as captain of the AHL's Calgary Wranglers, but now the former Hurricane and Flame has called it quits.

For years now, the Calgary Flames have had a deep connection with the Sutter name, and that's dated back a long time, as they drafted Brett with the 179th overall pick back in the 2005 NHL Draft. While his career didn't go the way that most expected, Sutter had a fantastic run in the AHL and the NHL, ultimately tallying 60 games played in the top league with Calgary and Carolina.

Over the last two years, the veteran has served as the captain of the successful Calgary Wranglers in the AHL, but on Monday, he officially hung up the skates for good.

«Following 17 seasons as a player, I'm very proud and excited to leave the game and have the opportunity to step directly into this role with the Flames organization,» said Sutter. «Saying goodbye to playing isn't easy, the game has treated my family and I so well for so long but the opportunity to stay within the organization that my family loves, makes this transition easier. I'm grateful to the Flames for the opportunity.»

He won't be departing the organization however, as it has been revealed that he will stay with the Wranglers as a coach, to which the player and the franchise are incredibly excited about given his wealth of knowledge and experience.

«The combination of Brett just finishing his professional playing career and his leadership qualities as a captain for most of his AHL career, provides our coaching staff with valuable knowledge, relationships and experience,» said Flames Vice-President/Assistant General Manager and Wranglers General Manager Brad Pascall. «We look forward to Brett's continued positive impact on our young players. We view it as a perfect fit.»

While he never had the success on the ice that he could have hoped for, he is after all the son of Stanley Cup winner Darryl Sutter, and given the coaching blood that he has, don't be shocked to see him climb the ranks and someday get behind the bench too.
