The Edmonton Oilers powerplay has been abysmal this season but a simple switch could make all the difference in bringing the Oilers momentum. It is no secret that the Edmonton Oilers have struggled offensively this season so far. Star players like Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid are not finding ways to put up the points they normally do. This even led McDavid to call out himself and his team for their struggles. When a team struggles their powerplay can be a way of helping the team find themselves but so far that has not been the case for the Oilers. So far this season the Edmonton Oilers powerplay is just 1-for-15.

Despite all of the talent on the roster the Edmonton Oilers just continually cannot find success on the powerplay. This means something has to change to give the Oilers a spark. One suggestion that has been made is to bring newcomer Jeff Skinner who signed this offseason onto the top powerplay unit. To this point, Jeff Skinner has been seen on the second powerplay unit. He has also been one of the Edmonton Oilers' most consistent offensive drivers through their first few games. On the flip side, Oilers forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has really struggled to this point. Rewarding Jeff Skinner and putting him with the top unit might help the team overall.

With Jeff Skinner running at good efficiency he could help the other guys on the top unit get going as well. It would also allow Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to have less pressure but still be one of the key contributors to the second unit. The Edmonton Oilers next game is Tuesday against the Carolina Hurricanes. This will be their first opportunity to change things. At this point, nothing is working for the Edmonton Oilers. They might as well reward Jeff Skinner for contributing to the offense at 5-on-5 and see if he can knock something loose and put a powerplay goal on the board. Once the offensive floodgates open for the Edmonton Oilers things will get going in a hurry. Until then Kris Knoblauch needs to manufacture as many chances and opportunities for guys that are playing well as he can.
