This evening a new report revealed that a potential owner wanting to bring back the Quebec Nordiques to the NHL was turned down twice by Gary Bettman and the NHL.

The NHL has had a lot of movement with their teams over the last several years. The league has been expanding at a rapid pace adding both the Vegas Golden Knights and Seattle Kraken in the last few years. In addition, the NHL decided to move the Arizona Coyotes franchise after it folded to Utah and start an NHL team from the ground up there.

Today a new report has come out that Quebec has lost out on 2 opportunities to bring an NHL team back to the city due to Gary Bettman and the NHL. During a new podcast clip, a source confirms that billionaire Luc Poirier tried to secure the rights to the Arizona Coyotes franchise and move them to Quebec but lost out to Utah. There is also a report that Luc Poirier put in for an NHL expansion team likely when one was awarded to Seattle and once again his big was ignored.

[Luc] Poirier tried to move the Coyotes to Quebec, he was ready to pay the $380 million that Bill Daly and Gary Bettman were looking for at the time, but they didn't want them to move to Quebec, he would have to pay to keep the team [in Arizona]. Same thing with another team, he was ready to spend the $800 million, we don't know who, but somebody came up with a better offer [likely the Seattle Kraken], but it is clear, they don't want to go back to Quebec. I'm sorry, but this is the truth.

Around this time last season Gary Bettman confirmed that he and the NHL received interest from several cities including Quebec. The Quebec Nordiques are one of the most beloved defunct franchises in the NHL. After moving to Colorado in 1995 the city of Quebec lost NHL hockey. If the team were to return a rich history of successful NHL hockey would also return to the city of Quebec a passionate fanbase would once again have a team to root for and a rivalry would be reborn with the Montreal Canadiens.

It is unclear exactly how far along Luc Poirier got before his bid was ultimately turned down or why the NHL decided to go in a different direction. Quebec City has passionate fans who are hungry for the return of an NHL team to the city. If the NHL is planning further expansion we will likely hear the name Luc Poirier again as he continues to try and bring the Nordiques back to the NHL.
