Tonight a report from Edmonton Oilers insider Bob Stauffer has revealed the biggest hole on the roster that GM Stan Bowman will likely try to fill before the playoffs. The Edmonton Oilers have continued to stay busy on the trade market this season making multiple moves including a recent trade to land prospect Jacob Perreault. With the NHL trade deadline approaching quickly, teams are beginning to think about the needs they are going to try and fill with trades before the deadline passes. For the Edmonton Oilers, there could be several good areas to target in a trade to solidify the roster before the stretch run of the season. Many fans want a strong goaltender to put in tandem with Stuart Skinner for the rest of the season while others want the defensive unit overhauled. This evening NHL insider and Oilers reporter Bob Stauffer revealed what he expects the Oilers to do in the coming months.
Oilers insider expects the team to target a top-end defenseman
During the second intermission of the Edmonton Oilers game Bob Stauffer began to speculate about what moves the team is consdering making before the trade deadline. According to his sources and analysis of the team Stauffer expects the Oilers to pursue a top-four defenseman. For months there has been speculation about adding a right-handed defenseman to the team however right-handed defensemen who are that good are hard to find. This is why Stauffer thinks the Oilers are opening themselves up to the possibility of landing a better left-handed defenseman instead of requiring a right-handed player.

In response to Stauffer's quote, some names being thrown around to look out for in connection to the Oilers are Cam Fowler, Mike Matheson, Ivan Provorov, Alexandre Carrier, and possibly K'Andre Miller.

In the case of all of these players, they are on teams that are underperforming and could be considered selling teams by the time the NHL trade deadline comes around. Likely the most intriguing players to the Oilers from this list are Ivan Provorov, Cam Fowler, and K'Andre Miller. In the case of Provorov, he is an experienced defenseman who seems to fit within almost any system and is used to playing a lot of minutes overall but has struggled to find the offensive flair he had early in his career.

If the Oilers decide to go after Fowler it would be to take pressure off of Evan Bouchard when it comes to the offensive side of the game. Throughout his career, Fowler has been a good all-around defenseman who can put up 40 points when the team around him is good. Beyond being a name floating around as a trade target Stauffer has also connected Fowler to the Oilers at several points this season making him one to watch out for.

Finally, we have the least likely but best player potentially available in K'Andre Miller. Miller is just 24 years old and already is a minutes-eating defenseman but similar to Provorov has struggled to find consistency offensively. After a 40-point season in 2022-23 Miller has regressed to more of just a top-end defensive defenseman but with that said he still has incredible potential and is one of the better defenders in the Eastern Conference.

As the season continues on it will be interesting to see which players the Edmonton Oilers officially try to target and which ones they let other teams take a shot at stealing away. One thing is certain the Oilers will be making moves before the trade deadline and we all will be watching to see how Stan Bowman puts his stamp on this team.
