The Edmonton Oilers have recently claimed Alec Regula off waivers from the Boston Bruins, and this towering defenseman can bring a lot of good things to the team.

The Edmonton Oilers add some more depth to the blueline as they claim defenceman Alec Regula off waivers from the Boston Bruins.

A towering 6-foot-4, the right-handed defenseman has yet to play this season due to a knee injury. He was waived on Tuesday for an assignment to the AHL before Edmonton was able to swoop in.

A West Bloomfield, Mich., native, Alec Regula won a USHL championship with the Chicago Steel in 2016-17 before moving on to the OHL's London Knights.

He recorded 25 points and was plus-23 in 67 games in 2017-18 and the Detroit Red Wings selected him in the third round of the NHL Draft.

After the 2018-19 season, there was a front-office shakeup in Detroit as Ken Holland went to Edmonton and Steve Yzerman took over.

Early in the 2019-20 season, the Wings traded Regula to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for forward Brendan Perlini.

The leading defenceman for London in 2019-20, Regula starred in all situations, collecting 60 points and a plus-39 rating in 56 games before the pandemic cut the season short.

Turning pro in 2021 with the AHL's Rockford IceHogs, he counted four points in 16 games and eventually played three games in his first full pro season in the NHL with the Blackhawks.

He has since spent the past two seasons splitting his time between the AHL and NHL, combining for one goal in 19 NHL games.

The Ducks traded him to Boston in 2023 as part of a move where the Bruins traded for Taylor Hall to make some salary-cap space. He had 26 points and was plus-36, tops in the AHL for the Providence Bruins.

There was anticipation he'd at least fight for a job in the NHL this year but he was hurt to start. Now signed to a one-year, $775,000 deal, Regula comes in as the Edmonton Oilers organization currently struggles with cap issues.

Per PuckPedia, the Oilers are presently over the cap by $255,000, and it's likely they use LTIR relief or move a body to the Bakersfield Condors to get into compliance.

Oilers fans are definitely looking forward to seeing this towering defenseman lace up the skates soon, and there's no doubt based on his career stats, he is an extremely responsible defenseman who is able to help his team keep pucks out of the net.
