The Edmonton Oilers are intent on locking up Leon Draisaitl on a long-term deal, and now we may know what the big time deal will look like. Leon Draisaitl has become an absolute star in Edmonton alongside Connor McDavid, and while it's No. 97 that gets all of the applause and love, the team wouldn't be the same without Draisaitl. With his pending unrestricted free agency approaching in the summer of 2025, the team are looking to lock him up before other teams can negotiate, and now veteran insider Jim Matheson has revealed how much it will take to make that happen. If Oilers offer to Draisaitl starts with a 13, this deal is getting done, and maybe soon. I suspect he'll sign for about $13.5m a year. All this talk about him wanting to be top dog somewhere else? Why? The Oilers are closer to Cup than just about any other contender.

A deal worth $13.5 million a year would make him among the top two highest paid players in the NHL alongside Auston Matthews, and given how key he is to this team, locking him up will go a long way to convincing Connor McDavid to remain an Oilers. There's plenty of variables between now and then, but according to Matheson, if the team come with an offer at that level, he wouldn't be able to say no. Despite being one game from the Stanley Cup Finals, there's still a chance that he'll look to test free agency, and if that happens he could pass Matthews as the NHL's highest paid player, so now we need to wait and see what happens.
