Edmonton Oilers GM was recently interviewed by Frank Seravalli, where he revealed that he had no plans to acquire a goaltender prior to the trade deadline. With the NHL's March 7 trade deadline approaching, the Oilers, stuck in their traditional Stanley Cup-or-bust mode during the Connor McDavid-Leon Draisaitl era, are presented with some tough choices. First up: Can Stuart Skinner be relied upon to be their playoff shutdown goalie? His 2024-25 season has been anything but reassuring, leaving legitimate questions about Edmonton's goaltending stability.

Goaltending by definition is unpredictable, and the Oilers are living that unpredictability firsthand. Skinner had shown flashes of being Edmonton's steady regular-season goalie for the past two seasons, as the Oilers drafted him at 78th overall in 2017. And with McDavid and Draisaitl in the mix, the Oilers don't need championship-level goaltending to be able to compete, just stability.
The Oilers just need Skinner to be stable, not unbelievable
But any club can be harmed by its goaltending directly costing them games, and Skinner's recent woes must have raised a few eyebrows or so from Edmonton's management. Even so, NHL insider Frank Seravalli has stated that when he spoke with Oilers GM Stan Bowman for an episode of 'Frankly Speaking', Bowman dismissed rumors of acquiring a goalie. When asked directly if he was interested in making a trade for one, Bowman was brief and said no.

That tells us one thing for certain, if the Oilers are making a deep playoff run this spring, it's going to be with Skinner in the net. If that's a gamble worth taking, it remains to be seen.
