The Edmonton Oilers have tried out several young names this off-season, and now there's another one to watch as the team prepare for their next pre-season game. This off-season has been a critical one for the Edmonton Oilers, with the team looking to go one step further than 2023/24 and finally capture their first Stanley Cup since 1990. While they added some veterans in Jeff Skinner and Victor Arvidsson, they also brought in some young names, with 2024 first-round pick Sam O'Reilly reportedly impressing in camp. Now, he gets a massive opportunity ahead of the team's fifth pre-season game, with the 18-year old reportedly centering a line with Vasily Podkolzin and Corey Perry, two names that will likely make up the teams fourth line in 2024/25.

This is a huge opportunity for the London Knights prospect, who showed incredible talent in his draft year with 20 goals and 56 points in 68 games played, and with good size at 6-foot-1, he projects to be a good bottom-six piece for the Oilers. Given how filled their lineup is with veterans, there wasn't much expected of O'Reilly in camp, but he has impressed everyone on the coaching staff, and is now a genuine chance to take up a role on the team's fourth line when the year begins. There's still plenty of time for things to change with the team having some more pre-season games after this, but the Toronto native is pushing hard for a spot, and if the Oilers want to inject some youth into their lineup, there's no reason that he couldn't be given a nine-game tryout to start the new season.
