This evening a new set of comments from Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews and head coach Craig Berube have further clouded his return date. The Toronto Maple Leafs have now been without Auston Matthews for 23 days after he suffered a mysterious injury. Originally, the injury was considered a day-to-day ailment that Auston Matthews had been playing through and wanted to get fixed. Now the Maple Leafs have gone essentially the entire month of November without Auston Matthews after GM Brad Treliving placed him on injured reserve.

While Auston Matthews was out, things took a further twist when he traveled to Germany to see a specialist and have the injury evaluated.

Even with these frustrating road bumps, it was expected that Auston Matthews would return for the Maple Leafs' upcoming trip to Florida to play the Panthers and Lightning. However, this evening a new report from Mark Masters has indicated that this might not be possible anymore.
Auston Matthews provides a cryptic update on his return to the Maple Leafs lineup
Today Auston Matthews did return to the ice for the first time in nearly a month after dealing with this injury. This is of course great news that Auston Matthews is feeling good enough to skate however his post-practice interview has set off some alarms. According to reports Auston Matthews admitted he still needs a few more days on the ice and practices before he returns to game action.

This was further confirmed by a quote from head coach Craig Berube that was captured by Mark Masters. When speaking about his captain Craig Berube was concerned about the lack of skating that Auston Matthews had done lately which could delay his return.

With all of this new information from both Auston Matthews and Craig Berube, it seems as though his return is still very questionable. As of now, a return against the Florida Panthers seems unlikely for Auston Matthews but the door could be open to play the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday. Over the next several days all eyes will be on Auston Matthews to see how much he can do in practice and how he looks. Hopefully, Auston Matthews does not experience setbacks and can return to wowing all of us soon.
