The Toronto Maple Leafs and Chicago Blackhawks AHL teams have just made a trade with each other involving Matteo Pietroniro. The trade talk has been rampant around the NHL, and the Maple Leafs aren't any different. Teams are finalizing preparations for the 4 Nations Face-Off, so front offices are feeling the squeeze to make a move sooner rather than later. The Maple Leafs made a small transaction Sunday, trading defenseman Matteo Pietroniro to the Rockford IceHogs. It's not a blockbuster, but it does speak to the Toronto efforts to gain the right space and balance in the lineup.

Matteo Piertoniro is one of the longer-tenured defenders of the Marlies, yet he has seen limited ice this season, playing in only five games. After playing 91 games in each of the last two seasons, he's been mostly limited to a depth role this year. The move to Rockford should give him a fresh start and a lot more playing time than he had seen in Toronto lately. For Rockford, the addition of Pietroniro helps their defensive woes. Currently 13-14-4 with a minus-9 goal differential, the IceHogs have taken a step back after three straight division semifinal appearances. Pietroniro could help bring some stability to their blue line while the Blackhawks' prospects in Artem Levshunov, Sam Rinzel, and Ethan Del Mastro continue to develop. While Pietroniro has yet to make much of an impact at either the AHL or NHL level, his best season came with the USHL's Chicago Steel, where he put up 18 goals and 31 assists in 62 games. Now 26, he has a chance to revive his career.

Toronto got future considerations in return. It may appear as a low-stakes trade, but the Leafs hope whoever comes back from Chicago might prove to be a valuable add-on down the line.
