As Auston Matthews continues to hold off on signing an extension with Toronto, should the Leafs start considering other alternatives for their standout player?

Matthews Fixes the Coyotes

Without a doubt, Auston Matthews is the most successful hockey player to come from Arizona. He has been rumoured to be sent there for years, and the circumstances could be right for a move to happen.

Since being picked number one in 2016, Matthews has distinguished himself as the leading even-strength goal scorer in the league and has a Hart trophy to his name.

A potential trade involving Matthews is bound to be a blockbuster, with his hometown Coyotes being an attractive destination. The team boasts a wealth of young talent and is likely among Matthews' preferred places to sign long-term.

This mock trade would see the Leafs receiving Logan Cooley, the 2022 3rd overall pick whose analytics indicate a potential to be a transformative star. Additionally, they would acquire the promising young defenseman Janis Jerome Moser, former fifth overall pick Barrett Hayton, and two first-round picks.

Given the increasing unlikelihood of Matthews committing to a long-term contract in Toronto, is it time for GM Brad Treliving to seek other options? A deal of this magnitude certainly warrants serious consideration!
