There are only a few days left before the famous trade deadline and already we have a verdict on the fate of Sean Monahan and Joel Edmundson. Unfortunately for the Montreal Canadiens and the team's fans, according to tipster Elliotte Friedman, both players are definitely out of the trade market. This is frankly a disappointing development for the organization, as they could have become interesting pieces to add important elements for the club's rebuild. It doesn't really leave much to the imagination, and it's understandable that the injuries to both players make it hard to imagine a world where a trade will happen. In the case of the defenseman, he still has another year left on his contract, which means he could be an interesting piece to trade next year, should he come back healthy. But that's a big if, because the number 44's injury history is starting to become worrisome. However, in the case of Sean Monahan, whose contract will expire at the end of the year, it's clear that this is a tough blow. He could have made a lot of money, had he been able to come back healthy, when the organization had indicated he was to return to play the first time, during the month of January. Is it realistic to believe in a possible contract extension? Frankly, unless Monahan agrees to a short-term deal for a year or two, I doubt he will return to play for the CH next year. The word was getting out that the Habs would be quiet this year at the trade deadline, and now all indications are that this will be the case. In fact, that's what Friedman confirms in his most recent 32 Thoughts. Aside from perhaps Evgenii Dadonov as a backup for an organization in a rush to add depth, there aren't really any other assets expected to move in the next few days. Instead, Friedman opened the door to another possible Kent Hughes trade, thanks to the use of the team's payroll to accommodate a Stanley Cup contender. The tipster even suggests that the New York Rangers would be a strong possibility. If the Rangers need to free up salary and are willing to trade prospects, I can see Jeff Gorton (who knows them well) being interested. - Elliotte Friedman It should be said that this is really not the first time Rangers prospects have been linked to the Habs. Recall that the club has been linked to forward Vitali Kravtsov in the past. In short, this will be a much quieter trade deadline than last year, much to the dismay of many fans of the team.

Credit: InTheCoulisses.com
