Proposal to rename NHL's Lady Byng Trophy in honor of Johnny Gaudreau Gathers momentum

The tragic passing of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau has led to an outpouring of support and tributes on social media. Among these, one idea has particularly caught the attention of fans-a proposal to rename the Lady Byng Trophy after Johnny Gaudreau.

There's a growing movement online, with some even starting petitions, to replace the Lady Byng Trophy with the Johnny Gaudreau Trophy. The renaming annual award, could serve as a lasting tribute to Johnny, who played for the Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets.

The idea could happen considering the trophy is nearing its 100th year. Renaming it could honor Johnny's legacy in a meaningful way and give it a refreshing look.

It can also be a chance to rethink the decision making process. Currently, journalists vote for the winner, often based on the least number of penalties a player has during the season. Letting players vote through the NHLPA, might be a more fitting approach. The award goes to the player who displays the most sportsmanship but nobody knows that more than the men who play alongside or against them.

Johnny hockey himself won the Lady Byng in 2017, racking up just 4 penalty minutes in 72 games. It's easy to imagine he might have won it several more times if players had the final say. Given the circumstances, it's hard to see how Gary Bettman could refuse such a heartfelt tribute. I agree with the movement and so should you.
