The Stanley Cup Finals have once again come and gone, and while it was a disappointing end for the Oilers, Sportsnet had some huge numbers. Hockey remains the most popular sport in Canada for the viewers both in person and on television, but throughout the Stanley Cup Playoffs, it's safe to say that the numbers were much lower than anticipated. Now, a few weeks after the conclusion of the Stanley Cup Finals, Sportsnet have released their viewership numbers for a highly anticipated Game 7 in Florida. HERE FOR THE CUP! 🏆 Last night's Stanley Cup Final game 7 is Sportsnet's most-watched broadcast ever, reaching 15M Canadians, with an average audience of 7.55M. It is also the most-watched program ever on Sportsnet+, reaching 1.93M streamers.

It's unclear what the league can do to consistently increase viewers, as there have been criticism of the lack of growth under Gary Bettman's leadership, but to see 15 million Canadians reached for Game 7 is a massive number. Unfortunately for those in Edmonton, the Oilers would go on to lose, and while there's still incredible numbers in youth hockey, recent numbers from the Globe and Mail suggest that interest in the sport is going down. The few ratings numbers that have been released haven't been great . . . According to the NHL, seven million people across North America watched Game 1. Early in the week, Léger released a pollafter asking Canadians and Americans if they intended to follow the Edmonton-Florida series. The headline was that a majority in this country 58 per cent were not paying much or any attention.

Fortunately for the NHL, the league will always have a dedicated fan base of supporters, but unless the numbers can grow, there may need to be questions about Bettman's role as Commissioner of the NHL.
