The Edmonton Oilers have made a trade tonight that has left fans scratching their head regarding what other moves could be coming before the start of next season. Tonight the Edmonton Oilers have made a trade with the Vancouver Canucks to bring in Vasily Podkolzin. In exchange, the Vancouver Canucks will receive a draft pick in 2025.

The Oilers with this trade bring in former 10th overall selection Vasily Podkolzin. After being selected highly Vasily Podkolzin has struggled to find his place in Vancouver. Despite playing 137 games in the NHL over 4 seasons Vasily Podkolzin never really got a chance in the team's top-six. Then in 2023-24, he was relegated to mostly playing in the AHL where he played alright tallying 28 points in 44 games. On a larger scale, this move creates a discussion about the Edmonton Oilers future moves. In recent weeks Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg were both signed to offer sheets by the St. Louis Blues.

To this point, many fans and media assumed that the Edmonton Oilers would match Dylan Holloway's contract and let Philip Broberg go. However, with the acquisition of Vasily Podkolzin who plays a very similar role to Dylan Holloway things are less clear now. It will be fun to see if the Edmonton Oilers continue making moves trying to clear salary cap space to match the contracts of Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg. If not they could lose both players to a Western Conference rival for next season.
