Recently acquired Oilers prospect could make jump to NHL in wake of offer sheets

Edmonton Oilers prospect Matthew Savoie has suddenly been thrust into the spotlight after the St. Louis Blues signed another Oilers forward to an offer sheet.

That player of course, was none other than Dylan Holloway. The Blues signed Holloway as well as defenseman Philip Broberg to offer sheets earlier this week and the clock is now ticking for Jeff Jackson and Stan Bowman, who are running out of time to match them.

Broberg seems to be getting the majority of the discussion around this move as he is certainly the more well-known player at this point. However, Holloway was quietly turning into a key depth player for the team by the end of last season, especially in the playoffs where he scored 5 goals and 7 points in 25 games. Should the Oilers lose him to the Blues, there could be an open roster spot for someone else on the team. That is where Matthew Savoie comes in.

The Oilers acquired Savoie in a trade with the Buffalo Sabres earlier this offseason. He played just one NHL game for the Sabres, but is still a highly touted prospect as a former 9th overall pick. His small size may make his transition to the NHL difficult, but he has shown to be capable of handling the AHL, which is a good sign.

Savoie appeared in 6 AHL games at the end of last season, recording 2 goals and 5 points in the process, earning his first NHL call up. He also appeared in 34 WHL games where he scored 71 points, including 30 goals. He added 10 goals and 24 points in 19 playoff games. He has been a prolific scorer in the WHL dating back to his draft year. We know he can score. But can he handle the rough and tumble world of the NHL? We could find out as early as next season.
