Today St. Louis Blues defenseman Philip Broberg opened up about the offer sheet that took him away from the Edmonton Oilers and how his career has progressed since.

This summer the Edmonton Oilers allowed both Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway to reach free agency as restricted free agents. Despite offering them a qualifying offer the duo decided to sign with the St. Louis Blues leaving the Oilers the choice to match their contracts or let them leave. The Oilers ultimately decided to let both Broberg and Holloway sign with the St. Louis Blues.

Since making the move to St. Louis both Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway have seen a good amount of success putting up points in their new home. With their newfound success both players had been looking forward and not speaking about the situation they left. Today that all changed when Philip Broberg talked about his feelings about deciding to leave the Edmonton Oilers.

Philip Broberg reveals why he decided to leave the Edmonton Oilers

During his remarks, Philip Broberg began by admitting he enjoyed his time with the Edmonton Oilers. He revealed that the decision to leave came down to the Oilers' logjam of defensemen on the left side where Philip Broberg naturally plays. He saw an opportunity to play on the side he was more comfortable with and play higher in the lineup and took it.

I'm glad it happened. I had a good time in Edmonton. I enjoyed it. But I think I was ready for a new chapter.

They have a very good D-core in Edmonton. You have Ekholm, great player. Nurse, also a very good player, and Kulak is the same. I had to play a lot on my off side. I've done that a lot in Sweden before, so I'm used to it, but it's different playing the right side on the small ice surface.

The Edmonton Oilers of course tried to keep both Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway. Philip Broberg was set on leaving after not getting the opportunities he was hoping for as he stated. Ultimately they could not match the contracts and opportunities that the St. Louis Blues promised to both of the young stars.

Since joining the St. Louis Blues Philip Broberg has found the form and style of play that many saw when he was drafted 8th overall by the Edmonton Oilers. Through 8 games with the Blues Broberg already has 7 points and looks like the future of the Blues blueline. As for Dylan Holloway, his improvement is more modest but he has 4 points in 8 games and has found a role every night in the Blues lineup.

While the loss of Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway is frustrating it is an expected one with the way the Edmonton Oilers are constructed. There is only so much ice time to go around and the Oilers decided to load up on stars who need a lot of ice time. The losses sting extra so far this season as the Oilers have struggled to find depth scoring with Evander Kane out injured and Zach Hyman failing to produce. Now they have to watch Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway star for other teams while getting a couple of draft picks in return.
