The Toronto Maple Leafs suffered an embarrassing loss to the St. Louis Blues and now both Auston Matthews and Craig Berube have spoken about their in-game altercation.

The Toronto Maple Leafs continue their sluggish start to the NHL season. Last night the Maple Leafs played the St. Louis Blues and suffered a pathetic loss 5-1. After giving up a goal and falling to a minus-three on the game Auston Matthews returned to the Toronto Maple Leafs bench and was chewed out in a heated back and forth with Craig Berube.

The frustration seen by Craig Berube comes after his star players continue to not be able to buy into the defensive system that he is trying to put in place. Craig Berube is trying to institute a system that will be successful in the Stanley Cup Playoffs but it seems to be faltering so far. The loss dropped the Maple Leafs to 4-4 on the season and has left fans incredibly frustrated.

This morning after Maple Leafs practice both Craig Berube and Auston Matthews addressed the media. They decided to address what went down on the bench and how it would impact their relationship going forward.

During their press conferences from this morning's practice, both Auston Matthews and Craig Berube were asked about what happened during the game. Craig Berube confirmed that the frustration and anger he showed was in the name of accountability and not a personal attack towards Auston Matthews.

It's just accountability to everybody... It's nothing personal.

Auston Matthews also seemed to take the moment in stride. As anyone knows who has played sports occasionally a coach is going to yell when a player messes up. Auston Matthews confirmed that's all last night's moment on the bench was just a moment of frustration between coach and player.

I mean, I don't know. I mean, it's hockey. You get yelled at sometimes. Coach yells. You just kind of take it as it goes, Matthews said. I don't know. There's obviously an impact. We obviously all respect him and his presence and everything on the bench. Yeah, so it's not anything you take personally.

This is a fantastic response from the Toronto Maple Leafs new captain. Many fans were worried that Craig Berube's new more aggressive style was going to be a problem for the Toronto Maple Leafs core but they seem to be responding well to this point. Even Mitch Marner who many have called soft in the past understands that when bad plays are made there will be consequences handed out by Craig Berube.

I mean, you're pissed off if you're on the ice against a goal. So, you're already pissed off. We need to be more direct with that puck. We need to be better with it. We've got to be at the five as a unit, and, you know, you expect it when you get back it wasn't the prettiest of plays out of the five guys on the ice. - Mitch Marner

While the Toronto Maple Leafs have struggled so far this season it seems they are still on the same page and wanting to improve. As long as star players like Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner continue to buy into being accountable and playing a more responsible game everything should come together eventually.
