Training camps may have just opened today in the NHL, but that hasn't stopped Evander Kane from already making headlines, and for all the wrong reasons. The Edmonton Oilers don't start training camp until Wednesday, but we've already got some noise at the forward position when it comes to Evander Kane. According to Jim Matheson of the Sun, one storyline that needs to be watched closely has to do with Kane. «It's expected winger Evander Kane will fail the doctors' evaluation and he will need surgery on his troublesome sports hernia sometime during camp.» - Jim Matheson Edmonton Oilers president Jeff Jackson let it slip early this summer that Kane has been dealing with a nagging hip injury. Of course, the implications of that now become a topic for debate both internally in the team and with Kane's representation. There had been months of speculation that the Oilers were considering moving Kane in a cap-saving trade, as his contract carries a hefty $5.125 million AAV for the next two years. Of course, the other avenue would be placing him on LTIR heading into the 2024-25 season for some temporary cap relief. That latter option of LTIR will no longer be possible, based off the recent reports coming from Oilers insider Tony Brar.

The fact that the Oilers no longer have plans to put Evander Kane on LTIR can only mean one thing: he will have to be traded if the team wants to add room to their salary cap. GM Stan Bowman is going to have his work cut out for him due to the complexity of Kane's contract clauses. His deal contains a full no-movement clause through February 28th, at which time it converts to a 15-team no-trade list. Here's a good point from insider Jim Matheson: if they've known for some time there was a possibility Kane could miss a chunk of the upcoming season, why wasn't the surgery booked earlier? He even goes so far as to speculate that Kane himself might have delayed the surgery because he didn't want to interrupt his offseason, a move that further clouds an already murky situation. A trade is probably the most realistic option the Oilers have regarding Evander Kane at this juncture, but it does little to clear up the bigger questions of his attitude and awful reputation swirling around him, which could make it difficult for teams to want to acquire him, as he could disrupt the chemistry in certain dressing rooms.
