The Edmonton Oilers' powerplay has been a driving force for their success for much of this season. This has continued into the playoffs and now several NHL legends have come together to try and discuss how to stop it. The Edmonton Oilers have been unstoppable recently on the powerplay. So much so that the hockey community has come together to discuss the phenomenon and how to stop it. The topic first came up on Spittin Chiclets when former NHL defenseman Ryan Whitney talked about how absurdly good their powerplay unit is. «One of the greatest powerplay's in the history of man kind.» The Edmonton Oilers powerplay is a real life cheat code.

Since then several NHL legends have been asked their opinion on how to even slow down the Oilers' powerplay. First up was all-time great defensive center Patrice Bergeron. I don't know if I have an answer for that, Holy moly. That's the issue. There's so many threats. Usually it's like pick your poison, right? Like what do you think is the most dangerous shot? Or usually it's seams. You don't want teams to seam you. Then if you take the seams away, they're going to use the low play or use the shot from the point, which (Bouchard's) usually pretty accurate and usually gets it through It sounds as though Patrice Bergeron's advice is to take away seam passes that could lead to cross-crease shots and goals. From there it is hoping that Evan Bouchard can't put one past your goalie from the point. Legendary goaltender Henrik Lundqvist seems to agree that this is the best strategy to slow their powerplay down. .@HLundqvist shares the goalie POV of wanting more shots and less cross-ice passes against the Oilers powerplay

Now of course the best solution overall for opponents of the Edmonton Oilers is to stay out of the box altogether. However, with a group as talented as the Oilers that is easier said than done. As the playoffs continue on it will be fun to see how much the Edmonton Oilers can continue to weaponize their powerplay.
