The Edmonton Oilers have barely clawed their way back into the playoffs and now a new reporter has indicated the team might need to make a big trade to be a contender. Last season the Edmonton Oilers made an incredible run from being one of the worst teams in the NHL to a Stanley Cup Finals participant. After making the Stanley Cup Finals last season many expected the Oilers to roll right back into the Stanley Cup Playoffs with no problem. Instead to this point the Edmonton Oilers have sputtered out of the gate and now are barely in a playoff spot and not looking like a Stanley Cup contender. Throughout the season the reason why the Oilers have been struggling so bad has not been able to be singled out. Some blame it on injury luck with Connor McDavid going down while others blame it on the poor play of the defensive unit.

Many fans have also been dissatisfied with the play of goaltenders Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard. Today, a reporter from The Daily Faceoff has indicated that the goaltender might be the easiest thing to fix for the Edmonton Oilers going forward.
Reporter believes the Oilers need a major goaltending upgrade
This afternoon in a new story Scott Maxwell of Daily Faceoff spoke about the Edmonton Oilers' lack of success. While talking about the situation Scott Maxwell believes the Oilers have a goaltending problem. He believes that Stuart Skinner can still be a valuable goaltender as part of a split tandem. However, Scott Maxwell does not believe Calvin Pickard is strong enough to be the other half of that duo. I wouldn't go so far as to say that they need a better goalie than Skinner, but they at least need a better one than Calvin Pickard. Skinner seems better suited for a 1A/1B tandem than getting 60 starts as a starter, and Pickard isn't a 1B type of goalie. Give Skinner a capable tandem partner (you know, like what Jack Campbell was expected to be), and I think he'll be capable of taking them back to the Finals. - Scott Maxwell With this in mind, the Edmonton Oilers and Stan Bowman would need to make a major move to acquire a goaltender who can be a duo with Stuart Skinner and carry the load at times when he is struggling. The NHL trade deadline is still months away but if the Edmonton Oilers can stay in the playoff race look for them to potentially make a trade for a goaltender with the salary cap space they have left.
