The Edmonton Oilers face the Ottawa Senators tonight in an all-Canadian match-up, and the team will attempt to do something no other team has done all month.

The Ottawa Senators remain the NHL's hottest team as they gear up for their final game before the holiday break against the surging Edmonton Oilers on Sunday.

Ottawa extended its winning streak to six games with an exciting 5-4 overtime win in Vancouver on Saturday. Jake Sanderson scored the winner just 15 seconds into overtime, completing a three-point night that also included two assists.

Shane Pinto had two goals and an assist, while rookie Leevi Meriläinen recorded his first NHL win with 21 saves.

The Senators surged into the Eastern Conference's final wild-card spot with 38 points, going 8-1-0 over their last nine games. It's their first six-game win streak since March 2017, the last time they made the playoffs.

Despite blowing three leads, including Brock Boeser's late equalizer, Ottawa found a way to prevail. Jake Sanderson's decisive goal came on a slick move down the left wing, assisted by Tim Stützle.

Next, the Senators face an Oilers squad riding a 10-2-0 run in its last 12 games. Edmonton claimed back-to-back 3-2 overtime victories this week, including the NHL's first star Leon Draisaitl's quick-strike winner against San Jose on Saturday.

Adding intrigue, Edmonton will try to achieve what no team has managed this month: beat Senators goaltender Linus Ullmark in regulation.

Linus Ullmark hasn't lost in regulation all December, with his lone blemish a shootout defeat on Dec. 1. Since then, he's won seven consecutive starts, a streak the Oilers will aim to snap.

Sitting a single point behind the Kings for second in the Pacific Division, Edmonton will seek a high note on which to end the weekend ahead of a huge back-to-back in southern California following the Christmas break.
