Oilers fans, you may want to look away for this one, as Connor McDavid's likely salary it would take to keep him in Edmonton was revealed, and it's $20 million.

The Edmonton Oilers superstar, Connor McDavid, will be the first NHLer ever to sign more than a $20 million deal per season when his current deal expires in July 2026.

Analyst Dom Luszczyszyn from 'The Athletic' thinks he's on pace for a historic deal. His analysis aligns with the NHL's pace for its salary cap to balloon from $88 million today all the way to $113.5 million by 2027-28.

«A league-max deal is 20 percent of the cap and during the 2026-27 season that amounts to $20.8 million,» Luszczyszyn wrote. «According to my model, McDavid is currently the only player in the league projected to be worth 20 percent of the cap or more.»

There are three reasons why McDavid will likely earn $20 million annually

Luszczyszyn points out three reasons McDavid's next deal could eclipse the $20 million mark. First, the timing coincides with the cap exceeding $100 million for the first time, giving teams more financial flexibility.

Second, rising revenues may slow the historical decline in player value, which could make max contracts more feasible.

Third, NHL salaries lag behind other major leagues, and there may be momentum to close that gap, paving the way for top players to earn significantly more.

«The highest-paid NFL, NBA and MLB players all clear $50 million per season,» Luszczyszyn wrote. «The NHL is still playing catch-up on that front and McDavid has a chance to pave the way for that by raising the bar in a serious way.»

The 28-year-old McDavid is in the seventh season of the eight-year, $100 million deal that comes with an annual salary cap hit of $12.5 million.

At this point, just two players make more annually: Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs ($13.25 million) and Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche ($12.6 million).
