This afternoon during a press conference New York Rangers GM Chris Drury responded to accusations that he threatened Jacob Trouba into waiving his no-trade clause. Earlier this week after being traded to the Anaheim Ducks defenseman Jacob Trouba spoke to the media and accused the Rangers of threatening him. These accusations came after months of tension between Trouba and the New York Rangers who had been wanting to trade him but Trouba would refuse any trade that was sent his way. As a result, GM Chris Drury eventually gave Trouba an ultimatum: either accept a trade somewhere or we will place you on waivers and any team could claim him taking the control away from Trouba. It was a threat, Trouba said (per SNY). Yesterday morning it was accept this trade or we're scratching you. I said okay. Then it was accept this trade or you're going on waivers This led Jacob Trouba to accept a trade to the Anaheim Ducks under duress and then make comments bashing the New York Rangers organization for their handling of the situation. Now today Drury spoke to the media and responded to the accusations by Trouba.
Chris Drury responds to accusations put out by Jacob Trouba
During a press conference today Chris Drury made a statement regarding recent reports that the Rangers forced Jacob Trouba to accept a trade. In his response to these accusations, Drury leaned on the rules of the NHL from the Collective Bargaining Agreement to justify his actions. It's my job, and 31 other GMs' jobs, to try and do everything we can to help our team. There's things at our disposal in the CBA This is the second time that the Rangers have been linked to disrespectful practices after they decided to place forward Barclay Goodrow on waivers to get rid of his contract as well even though he had a no-trade clause as well. Chris Drury decided to not only address the Trouba situation but also try to defend his actions within the Goodrow situation as well. I'm not trying to mess with players. I have a ton of respect for Barclay and certainly, as I've said already, for Jacob. I'm just trying to do the best I can to move the team forward and make changes that I think are necessary. Regardless of Drury's intentions the New York Rangers now have a reputation for going against their own players in order to make roster moves. It will be interesting to see if the recent frustrations of Trouba and Goodrow will lead other Rangers players or even free agents to reconsider signing long-term in New York.
