TNT analyst Paul Bissonnette recently revealed that the Rangers are in crisis mode and could be doing something very shocking like bringing back Sean Avery. The New York Rangers, one season removed from the most improbable 114-point regular season which captured the Presidents' Trophy in 2023-24, has completely face-planted into the abyss. Barely surviving from a once powerhouse of a team, the New York Rangers lose several games they really should win. The Rangers sit just 23rd in the league standings at a point percentage of .500. But with the slide has come word of organizational dysfunction: Players, per Steve Dangle on his self-named podcast, are frustrated and appear to be pointing fingers at their general manager, Chris Drury, as the one responsible for their misfortunes. Steve Dangle went so far as to say there is some internal momentum for Chris Drury to be fired. There was a players-only meeting and the players-only meeting was not to discuss Peter Laviolette. As far as I can tell the relationship with Laviolette is fine, between him and the players so there's a lot of chatter about him potentially getting fired. I don't get the impression that they think he is either the problem or their main problem, like if they do think he's a problem, he's not the main problem. Their main gripe was Chris Drury[...] I get the impression these guys want to be Rangers and the reason they're so upset, and not necessarily being like 'Trade me right now,' is they just want Chris Drury to either change his ways or be gone. - Steve Dangle

Paul Bissonnette did little to douse the flames, however, on the most recent Spittin' Chiclets podcast. The commentator mentioned owner James Dolan might be considering one monumental move, potentially. There's a rumored sit-down between James Dolan and former Ranger Sean Avery that could be in the works in New York, about discussing some of the challenges. He threw in Sean Avery's name coming into the general manager job and cleaning up the mess himself. I'm also hearing rumblings that Sean Avery is going over to NYC to talk about the state of the New York Rangers. There is a crazy element to James Dolan that might get rid of Drury and hire Sean Avery as the next general manager. - Paul Bissonnette

While Drury is the far more accomplished of the two in games played and points accrued, there is no question his time in New York with the Rangers is now under severe scrutiny as both a player and as an executive. A future Ranger alum in Sean Avery could be the most intriguing, boldest, but least conventional move for change. Though unconfirmed whether Avery is, in fact, a serious candidate for GM, such a move would point to the Rangers accepting going for a risk, so as to lift their season and get back to their glory days.
