Dmitri Filimonov was a defenseman for the Ottawa Senators back in the 1990s, and reports have come out today regarding how he tragically passed away.

Filimonov was a defenseman who was drafted by the Winnipeg Jets but never played for them, instead having his rights traded to the Senators. He suited up for the first time in the NHL during the 1993-94 season. He had scored one goal and got four assists with the Sens in 30 games. It was sadly reported today that Filimonov had "died suddenly".

"Filimonov died suddenly. The hockey player's funeral is scheduled for Monday."

Dmitri played 30 @NHL games with the 1993-94 @Senators scoring a goal and four assists. He had a lengthy career in Russia. Dmitri Filimonov passed away today at the age of 52. #RIP

Filimonov also played in the AHL for two seasons before going to the Finnish Elite League. In 1997 he returned to Russia to play in the Russian Super League, which is now called the KHL. Filimonov retired in 2006.

Filimonov played for the Soviet national team at the 1991 Canada Cup, which was the last time the tournament was ever played. The Soviet Union was later dissolved that year.
