In game 4 of the heated series between the Bruins and Maple Leafs, Auston Matthews left the game early with some sort of illness'.

Immediately following the game, Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe provided an update on why Matthews left early.

Sheldon Keefe confirms that Auston Matthews was pulled by doctors in relation to the illness that he's been dealing with.

When you consider all of the health issues that NHL players have battled through during the playoffs, it seemed rather odd to see a player leave for illness, however it seems to be more serious than an upset stomach, based on a statement from Sheldon Keefe on Sunday afternoon.

Sheldon Keefe on Auston Matthews: "For whatever reason, it's not one of those run-of-the-mill everyday type of illnesses that sort of come and go. This one has lingered. The affects have lingered and gotten worse when he gets on the ice and is asserting himself."

As it currently stands, the Leafs are down 3-1 and likely will be eliminated soon, so it's reasonable to assume that Matthews could be shut down for the rest of the season.

Matthews certainly hasn't looked like his regular season self in the playoffs, and this could be the explanation as to why.

More to come.
