The Toronto Maple Leafs once again have a Nick Robertson problem after scratching him again and former Leafs GM Brian Burke gave his thoughts on a potential solution. The Toronto Maple Leafs and Nick Robertson have had a frustrating relationship over the last several seasons. Once considered a promising top prospect guaranteed to be a part of the future for the Maple Leafs things have gone off the rails. An injury riddled beginning to his career meant players overtook him. Then the firing of Kyle Dubas who drafted him put his future in major doubt. This offseason Nick Robertson grew even more frustrated with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The first year under new GM Brad Treliving did not yield more playing time for Nick Robertson which led to a trade request from the young player.

Eventually with the hiring of new head coach Craig Berube things seemed to be smoothed over. Craig Berube talked to Nick Robertson and promised him a fresh start. To begin the 2024-25 season Nick Robertson got several opportunities to show what he could do. Unfortunately, just a month into the NHL season we are back where we started with Nick Robertson scratched by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

After yet another setback the discussion about Nick Robertson's future in the NHL has picked back up. Today former Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke gave his opinion on what needs to happen next for the two sides.
Brian Burke believes Nick Robertson's time in Toronto needs to end
After years of trying to make things work between both sides, the Maple Leafs have once again given up on Nick Robertson. Former GM Brian Burke revealed today that he believes Nick Robertson can still be a great player in the NHL but does not see a future with the Toronto Maple Leafs working out. I like the player. Everyone does but he's not what they need. The problem is, he is a square peg in a round hole for me. He's a good player, he's a good kid from everything I see and he's a guy that should be playing in the league, but it doesn't have to be for the Toronto Maple Leafs. This has now become the overwhelming opinion of people from around the NHL. This situation seems to be heading towards a divorce between the two sides. Much like the recent Timothy Liljegren trade we could see Nick Robertson sent packing sooner rather than later.
