The Maple Leafs are closing in on a trade per Chris Johnston, and he has revealed how this could impact both Max Domi and Nick Robertson. The Toronto Maple Leafs have been rumored to be looking to add a middle-six center with the trade deadline approaching, and according to The Athletic's Chris Johnston, GM Brad Treliving would like to add more depth throughout the organization should the Leafs make a deep playoff run. Thus, this trade would ripple throughout the lineup, especially for Max Domi and Nick Robertson.

Domi has centered the Leafs' third line for most of the year, flanked by Bobby McMann and Robertson. His early season struggles to find his offense seem to be corrected; he has 14 points in 34 games. Moving to find another center suggests that perhaps Treliving is not convinced Domi is the best fit at 3C. With four years remaining on his contract and a 13-team no-trade clause, a move involving Domi feels unlikely, but his role may change should another center be acquired. He has been an asset in moving up and down the lineup since he can play both wings. But should he slide down to a shutdown line, he would need to increase his physicality. His nine hits in 34 games so far have been light. Meanwhile, things are nowhere near as safe for Robertson. The 22-year-old forward has consistently played fewer minutes than fourth-liners under head coach Craig Berube. In 34 games, he had six goals and 10 points but has been blasted for his one-dimensional play and complete lack of variety.

His desire to be a shooter hasn't earned him the confidence of the coaches, especially with McMann emerging as the better two-way player. He very well could be dealt on or before March 7 in either a center swap or in a separate move to strengthen the Leafs' back end. Salary retention and sweeteners could very well come into play given the Leafs only have $1.35 million in cap space. If Treliving brings in another forward, perhaps Robertson gets that move he apparently asked for last summer.
