The Vancouver Canucks are shopping veteran forward Ilya Mikheyev according to NHL insider Frank Seravalli, but the team may have difficulties getting what they want in return. The Canucks signed Mikheyev to a four-year deal during the summer of 2022. At the time, it looked like a solid signing, with the team adding a proven scorer at the NHL level for a reasonable cost. Ilya Mikheyev (4x4.75m with VAN) is a strong all-around forward. Great value deal.

Unfortunately, injuries have since made the signing look a lot more questionable. Mikheyev tore his right ACL during his first season with the team. The team is reportedly using this injury as an excuse for his poor performance last season, where he had just 11 goals and 31 points. However, teams are not buying that excuse. The Canucks have been working to move Mikheyev since shortly after their playoff run concluded. That also offered him to teams around the trade deadline... teams are asking the Canucks to attach an asset to Mikheyev to move him, something the Canucks are balking at - saying that it takes a full year to recover from ACL tear, and Mikheyev should be much better than next season.

As such, the Canucks may very well be forced to give up an asset such as a draft pick or prospect in order to move on from Mikheyev, who still has two years left on his current contract. Serravalli currently has him at number 6 on his trade board. Trade Targets 🎯 #Canucks Ilya Mikheyev joins the board, Vancouver has been looking to move him for cap flexibility to sign pending free agents.

Perhaps a rebuilding team like the San Jose Sharks or Chicago Blackhawks would be happy to add Mikheyev, especially if he comes with future assets as well. Only time will tell if the Canucks are actually willing to make that move though.
