Mason Geertsen finds himself playing with the Henderson Silver Knights, the AHL affiliate of the Vegas Golden Knights, and he revealed he had cancer. A hockey player with the Vegas Golden Knights minor league system has announced that he has been diagnosed with cancer. Henderson Silver Knights' defenseman Mason Geertsen announced on Friday that he was diagnosed with B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma following a leg scan last November 2022.

The 29-year-old immediately started treatment, taking a month off from the season before returning to the ice. He continued treatment through the summer and is currently in remission. As the Silver Knights prepare for their annual Hockey Fights Cancer game, Geertsen is encouraging others to get routine checkups and visit a doctor if something does not feel right. Now that I'm on the other side of this journey, I feel it's incredibly important to share my story and encourage everyone to be their own best health advocate, Geertson said. It's so easy to put off scheduling an appointment but trust me when I say prioritizing your own wellness is something that is worth the time and effort, Geertson said. It has been for me. Now in his second season with Henderson, Geertsen signed a two-year, two-way contract with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2023. He previously played 25 games with the New Jersey Devils during the 2021-22 NHL season. The Golden Knights organization is no stranger to cancer awareness efforts, as defenseman Shea Theodore became an advocate for the cause following his diagnosis and successful treatment for testicular cancer in 2019. We are very excited to know Mason is on his way to recovery and deserves nothing but good health and prosperity going forward.
