Today, a new interview between NHL insider Pierre LeBrun and Winnipeg Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff has shed some light on the Jets trade deadline plans. Earlier this week Cheveldayoff spoke to the media and commented on the future of Nikolaj Ehlers with the Winnipeg Jets. Now just a couple of days later Cheveldayoff has once again spoken out this time in an interview with Pierre LeBrun about the Jets full trade deadline outlook. The team currently sits in first place in the Western Conference, and many hope they will make a major move and go all in on winning a Stanley Cup this season. In his interview, Cheveldayoff talked about the idea of making a blockbuster trade over the next couple of weeks before the trade deadline passes.
Kevin Cheveldayoff Reveals The Jets Trade Deadline Plans In New Interview
During the interview with LeBrun for a new piece on The Athletic, Cheveldayoff spoke about trying to balance adding talent with allowing the current group who has great chemistry and put up good results to keep rolling. I'm going to see what's available on a daily basis, Cheveldayoff said. But I don't want to undersell how this group has done and what they've done together. It's not about who's at the trade deadline or whatever. It's about who's been a part of it for these 54-odd games. Cheveldayoff goes on to clarify his comments and confirm the team is always looking for ways to get better but they won't make a blockbuster deal automatically just due to their place in the Western Conference standings. It depends if there's players out there that we have access to and fit and warrant the first-rounder, Cheveldayoff said. Yeah I think of those decisions you don't set out to say, 'I'm trading my first-round pick.' It's vice-versa. It's the opportunity to acquire or not on something that you feel you need. It sounds as though Cheveldayoff is currently just keeping his options open and that if there is a deal that blows him away he won't be afraid to pull the trigger. However, the Jets are going to be responsible with the assets they have and trust in the group that is currently blowing away the rest of the NHL. Over the next couple of weeks we will have to see if this plan changes for Cheveldayoff and the Jets based on how they continue to stack up against the rest of the Western Conference.
