Today a new report has connected the Edmonton Oilers with the Vancouver Canucks involving goaltender Thatcher Demko.

Over the last couple of months, Edmonton Oilers fans have grown incredibly frustrated with backup goaltender Calvin Pickard.

The lack of stand-out performances from Pickard and fellow goaltender Stuart Skinner has led many in Edmonton to believe a major upgrade is needed heading into the trade deadline.

Of course, goaltender is one of the most difficult positions to upgrade in the middle of the season as few teams are willing to part with high-end goaltenders unless a massive price is paid.

Today a new report from The Hockey Writers has connected the Oilers to the Vancouver Canucks in a deal that would land Thatcher Demko in blue and orange.

In a new piece today reporter Jesse Courville-Lynch has thrown around the possibility of Demko being moved by the Vancouver Canucks to fellow Pacific Division rival the Edmonton Oilers.

This season Demko has struggled to find his form with the Canucks after struggling with injuries over the last couple of seasons.

Having played just 14 games this season and lost his starting spot to Kevin Lankinen while putting up a 3.26 goals-against average and a 0.873 save percentage Demko could be looking for a fresh start.

According to Courville-Lynch a trade involving Demko could make sense for both sides as the Canucks could be looking for a more consistent option while the Oilers can bet on upside.

Having a tandem of Skinner-Demko heading into the postseason is very enticing, especially if the Canucks' asking price for a trade return isn't ridiculous. Demko has proven time and time again that he can be an elite goaltender, and if he can play even half as good as he did before the injury, he could help the Oilers in a big way.

In return, the Canucks could get the stability they are looking for by taking Calvin Pickard back in the deal who has been one of the more consistent albeit average backup goalies in the NHL this season.

Pickard has been solid between the pipes this season for a backup goaltender, but there is always room to upgrade. He has an unorthodox style of playing that fans get concerned about quite often, but he has posted a 2.50 GAA and a .899 SV% through 18 games winning 12 of them, which is a solid stat line.

The trade would provide stability to a team like the Canucks who are just in need of someone to give Lankinen a few nights off here and there while the Oilers get a guy who could surpass Skinner as the starter if he finds his elite form again.

A trade like this would likely include more layers than a one-for-one deal but could be a small shake-up to give each team something they are coveting from the goaltending position down the stretch.
