One NHL insider reported today that Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane will be undergoing surgery and is almost certain to miss the beginning of the season. Oilers reporter Mark Spector revealed on X this morning that Kane will have surgery 'within the next 10 days' to fix a sports hernia he has been dealing with for many months now. Given the timing of the surgery, it is more of a matter of how much time will he miss rather than will he miss any time in the upcoming regular season.

One fan responded by asking why he waited so long to get the surgery. After all, Kane has been complaining about his hernia issues since at least last playoffs. Surely if they were deciding to go with surgery, it would have made more sense to do it as early in the offseason as possible right? Perhaps not. This may very well be a Victor Hedman-like situation where the team decided to delay the procedure as long as possible in order to create the most favorable cap-situation for the team possible.

Regardless of what the real reasons for this move are, there will always be fans questioning the teams' motives until the NHL changes how LTIR works. Until then, they will continue to make jokes about it every time a situation like this comes up, which is every season at this point.

Kane played in 77 games last season, recording 24 goals and 20 assists for 44 points. He added 4 more goals and 8 points in 20 playoff games. The Oilers will miss his physical presence up front, but they have more than enough firepower to make up for his production, at least to start the year.
