After a quiet time on the trade front in the NHL, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Minnesota Wild have come out of nowhere to make a deal on Thursday afternoon.

A depth player swap for both teams

While neither team is getting a major piece in the deal, it appears as though the teams have swapped defenseman Will Butcher and forward Maxim Cajkovic.

The Penguins have acquired forward Maxim Cajkovic from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for defenseman Will Butcher.

Cajkovic is signed through the 2023.24 season and his contract carries an average annual value of $925,000 at the NHL level.

The deal was first reported by NHL Insider Michael Russo, and while neither team got much better from the move, it helped them address positions of need as they both look to make a playoff push in 2023-24.
