For the past two seasons, the Calgary Flames have been playing without a captain since Mark Giordano was selected by the Seattle Kraken in the 2021 Expansion Draft. However, it seems they're all set to change that in the upcoming season. Craig Conroy, the Flames' recently appointed General Manager, confirmed this week that the team will name a captain before the puck drops on the 2023-24 season. The decision is expected to be made in collaboration with potential Head Coach candidates.
Conroy's Statement
Conroy also voiced his disappointment over the delay in filling the captaincy void left by Giordano. I just struggled with it each year, but obviously that's a decision that was above me, Conroy said. In the end, you need one person to go in and talk to the coach. Really, I think that has to be done. That's what I've always experienced in the NHL and to not have it was weird, to me. Looking at the Flames' roster, there are quite a few contenders for the captaincy, but one name seems to be on the tip of everyone's tongue: Mikael Backlund. Having been a part of the organization since they drafted him in 2007, Backlund seems like a strong contender for the 'C'. The Flames are also considering other players for the prestigious title. Tyler Toffoli, a strong forward, and the defencemen duo MacKenzie Weegar and Rasmus Andersson, are also in the mix. Who will ultimately wear the captain's 'C' on their chest in the next season is a burning question among Flames' fans.

As seen on Blade of Steel - Calgary Flames will reportedly name a new captain next season
