The Toronto Maple Leafs drafted William Nylander as a center way back in the 2014 NHL Draft, and now, almost 10-years later, his move back to that position is becoming official.

A breakout star

2022-23 was yet another incredible season on the wing for Nylander, as he tallied 40 goals and 87 points in 82 games played, but now, things around him are quickly changing.

The Leafs announced the positional move early this summer, and while many questioned the idea of playing him on the third line, one insider has now revealed why the move has been made.

Incredible depth

According to TSN's Darren Dreger revealed his thoughts behind the move, and for the Leafs, it makes plenty of sense.

We can't dismiss it out of hand automatically, you say, Okay, well, can you see Patrick Kane being a good fit for the Toronto Maple Leafs?' Well, if William Nylander excels at center and becomes a fixture there, you could definitely envision an upgrade on that right side.

If the Leafs could indeed land Kane, assuming they move out the salary of Calle Jarnkrok, this is how they could line up by the time playoffs roll around next year.

Domi-Nylander-Robertson
Reaves-Kampf-Lafferty

This is the deepest and most balanced lineup the Leafs would have had for the past decade, and even with all the weight of expectations on them, this would be a team no doubt capable of winning a Stanley Cup.
