William Nylander recently committed to a big contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The contract has a nice No Move Clause that lasts the whole eight-year term. It is worth $92 million, mostly in signing bonuses. Thanks to Toronto being arguably the largest hockey market, once Nylander signed the immediate talk became What will Mitch Marner's next contract look like?
How Marner and Nylander compare will determine the contract
Mitch Marner made over $3 million more than Nylander did in his second contract, which was a six-year, $65.4 million deal that followed his initial ELC. Whether Toronto wants to give Marner more, less, or the same money as Nylander depends on how much of an impact Marner has on the club going forward. Since Marner will become a UFA after the 202024-25 season, expect this to be the discussion until he signs a new contract or is dealtafter all, this is Toronto. The discussion is still months away, but by the sounds of it, I'm hearing the Marner camp has its sights set on something well north of $11.5 million per season.

The #Leafs next season will have the no.1, no.5, no.9, and no.11 highest-paid players in the NHL. I think it was important for Toronto to keep William Nylander, but we're onward to the next question - which will be how the team navigates the next Mitch Marner contract.

Insiders discuss what Nylander's deal means for Marner's camp
On Sportsnet 590's Kyper and Bourne show, Nick Kypreos, JT Bourne and Sam McKee were discussing about where the Leafs go now. Listen to the short discussion here:

Bourne noted that the $11.5 million Nylander signed for will be the floor for what Mitch Marner would ask. Whether or not the Toronto Maple Leafs feel that way is another question.
