With the NHL expanding into new markets in Vegas and Seattle, the league has found a new method of increasing revenues, expansion fees. As a result, it seems that the league may be looking to keep expanding.
NHL Insider Confirms League Still Looking To Expand
NHL Insider Pierre Lebrun recently commented on NHL expansion. It sounds like the idea is very popular among league executives so we may be on track to see a few new teams join the league over the next decade. You certainly got that sense from listening to Gary Bettman and looking at the body language of the NHL commissioner Wednesday at the Board of Governors meeting in New York. It felt like he came so close to just saying it's going to happen, but he said, No, we aren't ready yet. -Pierre Lebrun Lebrun discussed what cities are most likely to get a new team. It seems that Atlanta, Houston, Salt Lake City and Quebec City are the primary contenders.
Arizona Holding Up Expansion?
During the discussion, Lebrun went on to talk about the Coyotes, mentioning that their fate could be holding up expansion. As other governors told me Wednesday at the meeting, there's no question you have to figure out Arizona first in case you have to move them to one of those cities that we just talked about, Especially whether that's Houston or Salt Lake City. This lets us know for sure that the league is not necessarily confident that the Coyotes are going to be able to find a permeant home in Arizona. Once the Coyotes situation is figured out though, it sounds like we may be in for at least two new teams joining the league in the next decade or so.
