Milan Lucic is widely respected around the NHL as one of the last great enforcers, but unfortunately, his career was almost cut short after leaving Boston due to him considering retirement.
Not having fun anymore

While hockey is one of the most physical sports in the world, the players on the ice are still human after all, and one of the reasons they play the game is to have fun playing the sport they are most passionate about. Unfortunately, during his time in Alberta, Lucic revealed that he got to a point where that was completely stopped, and he was close to ending his NHL career at that point. It was the exact opposite. There were games where I was playing four, five, six minutes. You think, This is not what I signed up for. This isn't even fun anymore. Lucic felt lost. He contemplated walking away from the three full seasons that remained on his contract.
A return home
Ultimately though, he stuck it out, and until his final season in Calgary, he became one of the most beloved players on the Flames team, but now, he's back with the team that drafted him way back in 2006. Grateful is probably the biggest word, Lucic said, discussing his return with his wife, Brittany, and children Valentina, Nikolina, and Milan Jr. Just being grateful for this opportunity, grateful for this chance. Just so I could focus on something new, something fresh. Because maybe if I had gone back to Boston, it would have been a little harder to deal with. Because that's all I knew. I was used to him being around while I was a Bruin. In Boston, Lucic has once again shown he could thrive, but after slowing down with Darryl Sutter as coach, he couldn't handle it anymore, but fortunately for one of the games last great enforcers, he stuck it out and is now thriving once again.
