On a recent podcast appearance Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff shared some news regarding the Maple Leafs' forward. I think they're quite comfortable from the Nylander camp's perspective. Let's play this out, see what happens, and enter the season. Let's see if he can have another year like he did last year because if it's not going to be in Toronto, it's going to be somewhere else. Similar to what happened last time the Maple Leafs and Nylander negotiated a contract back in late 2018, the player isn't too worried about his next contract. Whether the two come together and sign a deal during this season or wait to see how it plays out next offseason, Nylander is fine with either option.
Could Nylander be traded?
According to Seravalli, the Maple Leafs never considered trading Nylander at any point during this current contract negotiation saga. I don't think so. Especially with one more season at his current deal, and we'll discuss the cap situation in a moment. When you look at where they're at, if you have a guy who's anywhere close to 40 goals and 90 points for under 7 million bucks a year, you've got to take full advantage of that. So, I think he's more valuable to the Leafs than he is on the trade market for this upcoming season. The Maple Leafs want to finally make a deep playoff run and they won't hurt their chances by trading one of the most valuable players on their team for what would likely be less than his worth. Both sides are content with playing out the season and re-evaluating next year. Either way, the team has one of the best wingers in the league on a bargain of a contract for one year.
