NHL pride nights have unfortunately become a popular subject for debate as the league continues to take measures to restrict the practice. Today, the league took another step towards banning pride nights altogether.

NHL Bans Pride Tape

The NHL announced a new policy today dictating what teams can and cannot do on special event night. The Policy also places restrictions on players, who essentially are now encouraged to keep their mouths shut. The main result of this policy is that pride tape, a hallmark of pride night, will no longer be allowed on player's sticks when they are at any NHL event including warm-ups and even team practices.

"Players shall not be put in the position of having to demonstrate (or where they may be appearing to demonstrate) personal support for any Special Initiatives. A factor that may be considered in this regard includes, for example, whether a Player (or Players) is required to be in close proximity to any groups or individuals visibly or otherwise clearly associated with such Special Initiative(s)."

Players Unable To Express Themselves

A few players exercised their freedom of speech last season when they refused to wear pride jerseys. Since then the issue has received a lot of attention and the league has seemingly responded by restricting all players ability to express themselves as they would like.

As it stands NHL pride nights this season will be extremely limited in what they can do and it seems that players may not be allowed to comment or if they are, many will likely feel uncomfortable commenting on pride events as the league has shown a willingness to limit them in any way possible. Based on the wording of the new rule, players may not be able to interact with fans at all if those fans are clearly displaying support for pride.
