Over the last several decades, the NHL has made several changes to the rules and equipment that have reduced scoring, and now Don Cherry has a suggestion to fix that.

The NHL has been looking for ways to increase its fan base and bring more eyes to the game of hockey. In the past several years many fans and media have suggested changing rules to encourage scoring increases.

Since the 1990s, the pace of scoring has drastically decreased for a couple of decades. Recently, however, due to the immense talent in the league, scoring has seen a bit of an uptick.

This has been a delight to fans who have loved the high-action increase of the pace of play and scoring and now there are discussions on how to keep that trend going.

This afternoon, legendary NHL commentator Don Cherry made a new suggestion to bring back a rule that would teleport the NHL back almost 100 years.

Don Cherry suggests making a major change to goaltending equipment

In a new post on X, Don Cherry joined the discussion regarding the lack of scoring that still exists in the NHL.

In his mind, the biggest way the NHL can make a clear and quick change is by implementing a rule that mandates smaller goaltender equipment.

Of course, this discussion deserves a bit of nuance beyond just increasing the scores of games in the NHL.

Originally the reason that goaltending equipment was made larger was in the name of safety for goaltenders overall. Somewhere in the late 1990s and early 2000s, things seem to have gotten out of hand.

In a recent example former goaltender Cory Schneider showed off Dallas Stars goalie Jake Oettinger's new pads and all the new things that have been added within the last few years to a goaltenders arsenal.

If the NHL and Gary Bettman were going to consider a major change to goaltending equipment like this it would likely be preceded by a committee to discuss the rule.

If the NHL is serious about keeping the safety of goaltenders they would need to have goaltenders from both the current era and the past on the committee to discuss the nuances of this debate.
